Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika has met today at the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation with Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Aghvan Hovsepian. During the meeting a Program of Co-operation for 2007-2009 has been signed. The Program was adopted in elaboration of the Agreement on Co-operation between the two Offices signed in Yerevan on September 22, 2006.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation expressed his sincere condolences on the occasion of the premature death of Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Andranik Margaryan.
In his turn, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Aghvan Hovsepian thanked Yuri Chaika for organization of the meeting and noted that the document, which they had signed earlier that day, was unprecedented in the history of the Prosecution Services of both countries.
The 3-year Program provides for organization of scientific and research conferences, workshops, round tables devoted to different activities of the prosecution authorities.
Moreover, meetings of experts of the Prosecution Services of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia to exchange experience in training of officers and to determine the necessity of further professional development of officers of both Prosecution Services are being planned.
The two colleagues have already exchanged experience during the meeting itself. Prosecutor General of the Republic of Armenia Aghvan Hovsepian told Yuri Chaika about the reform of the prosecutorial system in the Republic of Armenia. In particular, he noted that a special counter-corruption division had been established within the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia with the aim to investigate major corruption-related crimes. Aghvan Hovsepian pointed out that the head of the division would be appointed by the President of the Republic of Armenia upon recommendation of the Prosecutor General to work under direct control of the latter.
The head of the Armenian delegation told about other important examples of the prosecutorial reform ongoing in the Republic of Armenia.
During the meeting, Yuri Chaika informed the Armenian delegation about different reforms ongoing within the Russian Prosecution Service. In particular, he stated that the State Duma currently considered the bill establishing the Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation. In the opinion of Yuri Chaika, during the discussion of the bill the experience of other countries, particularly, of the Republic of Armenia, should be taken into account.
Following the results of the meeting, the two colleagues expressed hope for further efficient co-opration.
