A meeting has been held today between Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the French Republic to the Russian Federation Jean de Gliniasty initiated by the French party.
In his speech of welcome, Yuri Chaika noted that the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation maintained close working relations both with the law-enforcement authorities of the French Republic and with the Embassy of France in Moscow.
The Russian Prosecutor General expressed his opinion that common tasks both countries faced, namely to ensure public safety and to fight against terrorism, legalization (laundering) of proceeds of crime, trafficking in drugs and psychotropic substances, provided for close and beneficial co-operation.
In his turn, Jean de Gliniasty expressed his gratitude to Yuri Chaika for the warm reception and outlined a number of questions of mutual concern for discussion. They discussed, in particular, problems in the provision of international legal assistance and extradition of criminals.
Both parties unanimously agreed that the mechanism of regulation of those problems existing in Europe was ineffective and it should be seriously upgraded. The participants of the meeting stated that extradition-related issues often went beyond the legal sphere into the sphere of politics, which was inadmissible from the view of international law and safety in general.
The Ambassador of France also touched upon common problems connected with counter-terrorism activities of both countries, protection of personal data, operation of jury courts, fighting against counterfeit goods.
The participants of the meeting expressed a unanimous opinion that there was a long-felt need to sign an Agreement on Co-operation between the Prosecutor General’s Office and the Ministry of Justice of the French Republic in order to further foster co-operation between Russia and France in combating crime and protection of human rights.
In conclusion Yuri Chaika congratulated Jean de Gliniasty with his appointment and wished him success in handling problems in his new position.
