A meeting of Mr. Yury Chaika, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, with Ms. Tuija Brax, the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Finland, was held today in the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation.
Top officials of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Finland and the Embassy of Finland in the Russian Federation participated in the meeting.
Mr. Yury Chaika expressed gratitude to Ms. Tuija Brax for her visit and familiarized the guests with the functions of the bodies of prosecution in Russia. He stated that the protection of human rights and freedoms is the priority line of activities of the Russian prosecutors. The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation emphasized that last year, a whole range of amendments and changes was introduced into the domestic legislation aimed at strengthening the function of the Prosecutor's Office in the field of protection of human rights.
Speaking about international cooperation, Mr. Yury Chaika specifically noted that Russia and Finland are efficiently and fruitfully cooperating in combating against transnational crime. 'We are actively cooperating, sharing positive experience and this seems very important, taking into account that we have neighboring territories,' the Prosecutor General of Russia stated.
In her turn, Ms. Tuija Brax expressed her gratitude to Mr. Yury Chaika for an opportunity to visit the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation and discuss topical interdepartmental issues. In particular the parties touched upon the question of using video-conference
communication between the two countries while executing the requests for mutual legal assistance. 'Such type of communication may be used, for example, in order to interview witnesses,' Ms. Tuija Brax stated.
The representatives of the Prosecutor General's Office of Russian and the Ministry of Justice of Finland agreed to hold separate meetings to discuss this issue with the involvement the concerned departments within the frameworks of a special seminar.
In the course of the meeting, Mr. Yury Chaika underlined the necessity of further development of bilateral relations which will allow to increase the efficiency of the joint work.
In her turn, Ms. Tuija Brax expressed her confidence that this meeting will contribute to promote the efficiency of professional ties and the development of the dialogue on a wide range of legal issues.
