Today, in the Office of the Prosecutor General of Russia, a meeting was held between Mr. Yury Chaika, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation and Mr. Ioannis Tentes, the Attorney General of the Supreme Court of the Hellenic Republic.
In his welcome speech, Mr. Yury Chaika stated that the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation pays great attention to international cooperation with law enforcement bodies of foreign states on different issues, including in the area of protection of human rights and freedoms, combating crime, countering corruption, extradition issues and rendering legal assistance in criminal matters.
Upon the results of the meeting, a Memorandum on Mutual Understanding on the Issues of Cooperation was signed between the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation and the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Supreme Court of the Hellenic Republic.
According to the concluded document, the parties have agreed to cooperate in the following priority directions:
- to hold meetings and consultations with a view to share experience, discuss matters of mutual interest, including those to be examined at international fora and organizations;
- to exchange information on legal system and legislation of their countries, law-making activities and measures for execution of laws in the spheres within the competence of the parties and, if appropriate, on foreign legal experience;
- to render support, connected with execution of the requests for extradition and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, including by the way of holding consultations;
- to cooperate in the sphere of training and advanced qualification training of personnel for the bodies of prosecution.
At the meeting, preliminary arrangements were made to hold a joint seminar in August 2010 in Moscow to share experience, including on the issues of re-consideration of court decisions and functioning of the institution of appeal.
Mr. Ioannis Tentes, the Attorney General of the Supreme Court of the Hellenic Republic, stated that the Memorandum will deepen the efficient cooperation between the two departments and will contribute to wider sharing of experience on the whole range of the prosecution bodies' activities, first of all, in the area of strengthening legal order and combating crime.
