At the invitation of Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Hungary Tamas Kovac paid an official visit to Moscow.
Today during their meeting in the Prosecutor’s General Office of the Russian Federation, both Heads discussed questions of cooperation between these two institutions.
In his speech of welcome, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation acquainted his Hungarian colleagues with the recent development of the system of the prosecution authorities of Russia and stressed its enlarging participation in international cooperation.
Yuri Chaika highly appreciated positive mutual relations of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation with the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Hungarian Republic in the field of cooperation on extradition and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
Yuri Chaika reminded that since 2006 the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation had received 56 requests for legal assistance in criminal matters from the Prosecutor General’s Office of Hungary, 53 of which were executed. During the same period, the Hungarian colleagues received 13 requests for legal assistance in criminal matters from Russia, 11 of which had been already executed.
Moreover, the Prosecutor General of Russia noted efficient cooperation through the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors (CCEP). Yuri Chaika informed Tamas Kovac about the Conference of the European Prosecutors General, which would take place in Saint Petersburg, July 2008. The Conference will be dedicated to the role of the Prosecution Service in the protection of human rights and public interests outside criminal field.
In his turn, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Hungary Tamas Kovac thanked his Russian colleague for the invitation to visit Russia and stated that he highly appreciated mutual work of the prosecution authorities of Russia and Hungary in settlement of different legal issues.
Yuri Chaika shared the experience of cooperation of the Prosecution Service of Russia with the law-enforcement authorities of other countries and noted that the Prosecutor’s General Office of the Russian Federation concluded 28 bilateral Agreements on Cooperation with foreign partners and 6 multilateral Agreements within the CIS. According to the Prosecutor General, such Agreements contain rules and provisions on the areas and forms of cooperation including exchange of experience and consultations on preparation and execution of requests for legal assistance. Yuri Chaika also offered his Hungarian colleague to sign the Agreement on Cooperation between the Prosecutor’s General Offices of Russia and Hungary and handed to him the draft Agreement.
