Today, on February 5, 2015, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation hosted the meeting of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chayka and the Minister of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mostafa Pourmohammadi.
From the Russian side, the event was attended by Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Alexander Zvyagintsev, as well as heads of departments of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.
The Iranian side was represented by the Chairman of the Committee on Legal Affairs of the Islamic Consultative Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran Alahyar Malekshahi, Adviser to the First Vice-President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Head of the Headquarters for the Fight against Corruption Kazem Palizdar, Director General of the International Cooperation Department of the Ministry of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammadali Mehranfar, and Deputy Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the Russian Federation Alireza Sanei.
Welcoming the guests, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation noted that an integral part of the development of relations between both states was the establishment of cooperation between various governmental agencies, including sharing of their experience.
He stressed out that the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation paid great attention to international cooperation, including in extradition and legal assistance in criminal and administrative cases.
Mr. Chayka familiarized the guests with the tasks, structure and system of organization of the work conducted by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.
In his speech, he highlighted that the activities of bodies of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation aimed at ensuring the rule of law, protection of rights and freedoms, interests of society and the state. In addition, according to him, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation coordinates the work of all Russian law enforcement agencies to combat crime.
Mr. Chayka told that the previous week he had met with the Head of the General Inspectorate Organization of Iran Nasir Ceragem. During the meeting, the sides discussed prospects of bilateral cooperation in such important areas as the fight against corruption.
He also noted that the following week he would have a meeting with the Prosecutor General of Iran Rais-Assadati within the framework of the 7th Regional Conference of the International Association of Prosecutors held in Sochi on November 9 – 12, 2015.
The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation stated that the intensity of the interdepartmental relationship has reflected the general trend towards intensification of the Russian-Iranian cooperation in various fields.
During the meeting, the sides also discussed other issues of bilateral cooperation.
In turn, Mostafa Pourmohammadi thanked Mr. Chayka for the reception and informed on the organization of national law enforcement agencies of Iran.
The Minister of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Iran stated that Russia and Iran have shared a duty to protect society from crime. He stressed out that the Ministry of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Iran was interested in cooperation with the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, since experience of their Russian colleagues was rewarding for the Iranian representatives.
He also noted that in the future it would be required to develop joint efforts in the fight against crime, to continue exchanging experience in this field, as well as seeking new ways and forms of cooperation.
The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation highlighted that the agencies of both states were much in common and suggested to consider the issue of signing a Memorandum of Understanding and cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to Mr. Chayka, this event will be an important step towards improving the effectiveness of joint efforts to combat international crime.
In conclusion, Mr. Chayka expressed his confidence that the meeting would contribute to the sustained development of cooperation between both states in the field of protection of human rights and combating transnational organized crime.
