On April 10, 2008 upon request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, the competent authorities of the State of Israel extradited to Russia Alexander Levin accused of the commission of crimes defined by Article 162, part 3, para. “c” and Article 105, part 2, paras. “a, g, h” of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
It is necessary to point out that in January 2001, Alexander Levin along with other persons got in a house of the Kovalenko couple, located in the Belgorod Region, committed a robbery-related assault and killed the couple. The property of the victims amounting to 115 000 rubles was stolen.
After the crime, A.Levin left the Russian Federation. Later on, he was located in Israel.
In February 2004, the Ministry of Justice of the State of Israel received a request sent by the Prosecutor General’s Office for extradition of the above-mentioned citizen. Based on the request, A.Levin was detained in December 2006. In February 2008, the Israeli authorities decided to extradite A.Levin.
On April 10, 2004, Alexander Levin was extradited to Russia under the escort of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia and the Russian Interpol Bureau at the Ministry of the Interior of Russia.
It should be noted that it was the first case over the long time that the competent authorities of the State of Israel satisfied the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation for extradition which can be viewed as a basis for further successful co-operation of the law-enforcement authorities of these countries.
