The Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia hosted a round table on the topic “Prosecutors’ activities on countering terrorism and extremism”. The event was held in pursuance of the agreements of the Prosecutors General of Russia and Egypt. They were reached during the first visit of Igor Krasnov to Cairo in May 2023. The round table was also envisaged in the bilateral program of cooperation signed in Saint Petersburg in June 2022.
On behalf of the Prosecutor General's Office of Russia, the meeting was attended by Yuriy Khokhlov, Head of the Department for Supervision over Execution of Laws on Federal Security, Inter-Ethnic Relations, Combating Extremism and Terrorism, officers of that division and the General Department of International Legal Cooperation.
The Egyptian delegation was headed by Ziyad Al Sadyk, Head of a specialized division of the Public Prosecution Office of Egypt.
The participants of the round table got acquainted in detail with the system of organization of the work of the prosecution authorities in Russia and Egypt on countering extremism and terrorism. They considered the powers of prosecutors in this area, including the specifics of supervising the investigation of criminal cases of this category, bringing persons to liability, as well as countering the financing of terrorism. Measures to prevent the influence of such ideas on citizens were examined.
The Egyptian colleagues showed particular interest in prosecutors’ activities to block websites that post information of an extremist nature or contain calls to commit terrorism, the specifics of recognizing organizations as extremist or terrorist, as well as banning their activities.
The meeting was an important next step in strengthening the cooperation between the prosecution services of Russia and Egypt in combating extremism and terrorism.
